When someone in Kolkata searches for a dentist, an interior designer or an air conditioner repair service, Google usually answers with a map and three business listings before showing any website. Getting into those three positions is what local SEO is about, and it follows rules that are quite different from ordinary organic ranking.
The three signals that decide local rankings
Google describes local ranking in terms of relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your business matches what was searched. Distance is how far you are from the searcher or the area they specified. Prominence is how well known and well referenced your business is, both online and offline.
You cannot change distance, and that is the first thing worth accepting. A clinic in Behala will struggle to rank for a search made in Salt Lake. What you can change is relevance and prominence — and most businesses have barely started on either.
Relevance: what most listings get wrong
- The primary category is wrong or too broad. A category is not a keyword; it is Google's classification of what your business is. Choosing 'Marketing agency' when you are specifically an 'Internet marketing service' changes which queries you can appear for.
- Services are left empty. Every service you offer should be listed with a genuine description.
- The business description reads like a keyword list rather than an explanation of what you do.
- The website has no page that matches the service being searched for. Google connects your listing to your site; if the site is silent on a service, relevance suffers.
Prominence: the slow, compounding part
Prominence comes from reviews, mentions, links, consistent business information across the web, and the general strength of your website. This is where established competitors have an advantage and where new businesses need patience. Reviews are the fastest lever available: real reviews collected steadily, from actual customers, with a reply to every one.
Why some Kolkata businesses never rank
In my experience the recurring causes are simple. The profile was set up once, years ago, and never touched. The website has one page and no location relevance. Business details differ across the website, Justdial, Facebook and the Google listing. Or the business chased a shortcut — keyword-stuffed business names and fake addresses — and ended up suspended.
What to fix first
- Rebuild the Google Business Profile completely: categories, services, hours, photos, description, attributes.
- Create a real page on your website for each core service, written for customers.
- Make your name, address and phone number identical everywhere they appear.
- Start a simple, honest review request habit after every completed job.
- Make sure the site loads quickly on a mid-range phone — most local searches are mobile.
None of this is exotic. It is basic work done thoroughly, which is exactly why it still creates an advantage.
